This week grade one had an enjoyable and competitive time. They were able to use the footballs; passing it through each other’s legs, and passing from left to right to each other. They were able to say each other’s names in English successfully without any pronunciation problems, and the more we repeated the games, the faster each team would become.

We split the groups into girls VS boys. Angela from the girls and Lucas from the boys were among the most attentive of the group, and became leaders in making the rest of the team understand.

We also played games in running around the cones and listening to English commands to complete the game. The teams throughout were very energetic, the boys chanting “come on boys, come on boys” and the girls chanting “come on girls, come on girls”

For this week’s English Corner we challenged grade 1 to think outside the box. We gave each student a piece of a4 paper with a shape cut of it, this was to be their inspiration or starting point, some shapes were basic such as triangles and squares, whereas others were much more random.

They responded brilliantly and creatively, some drew inspiration from previous lessons. Their artwork was very beautiful and colourful. We had zoo scenes, underwater water scenes and even Spiderman!

For the English corner today, we worked on two songs. The first was 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. Most of the kids knew this song a little, but didn't know all the words. The second song was 'Row Your Boat.'

On Monday, grade 2 played two games. The first game was a variation of a traditional party game called Pin the Tail on the Donkey, however in this case, the students needed to pin the nose on a picture of the snowman Olaf from Frozen. One at a time, students were blindfolded, spun around, then they tried to put the nose closest to the correct place on Olaf's face. The student who was closest was the winner.

The second game involved dancing around the room until the music stopped, at which time they had to find a numbered piece of paper. The teacher then drew a number out of a hat containing matching numbers. The student with the corresponding number had to sit down, and the music resumed. The process was repeat until there was one clear winner.

During the warm up, the students drilled a small choreography based on Michael Jackson's Instructional Video  Billie. The idea was to repeat the movements with unity and regiment.

After the students memorize the choreography, they were ready for a small contest called: The Search for The Best Dancers.  One by one the students were eliminated from the contest and the students sitting down voted for who they believe was the best dancer.

During the last part of the class, the students were introduced to the idea of Ballroom Dancers. The boys were instructed to hold the girls  with respect and work in harmony with each other. Also, the more timid students work on their fear to perform in front of others in collaboration with a partner.

Art is often used as therapy as it allows self-expression and can be very relaxing. For this week’s English Corner we decided to make mandalas with the students. A mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the universe.

They are often very symmetrical. The making of these is becoming more and more popular with those who don’t necessarily identify with said religions but appreciate their beauty, spiritual quality and find them incredibility relaxing and interesting to make.

We wanted to the students to make these as they could choose their own theme, things they like for example but it also challenged them to consider composition and symmetry. When they completed their mandalas they told me the story behind them and why they had chosen certain imagery. It was a lovely insight into their individual personalities.

On Wednesday, grade 5 continued to play Celebrity Heads. They started by using pictures of famous people provided by the teacher, then they moved on to providing their own names for their classmates by writing them on the board. Their sentences and logic was more refined than the previous week.
