摘要: Our Funny English Corner

Grade One:
This week grade 1 learned some British and American playground games. By understanding what children play in the playground in the West, gives thema great insight into Western culture.

British Bulldog (Britain) –

In English Primary schools,we play a game called Bulldog. The aim is for one person to tag as many students as they can, when the rest of the students run from one end of the court to the other. When one student is tagged, they have to join the student in the middle to tag the rest of the students. Grade 1 had fun playing this game and got very competitive. They learned how to think quickly on their feet, learning how to dodge each other.

Kick ball (American) –

This is a spin off of American Baseball, but instead we kick a ball. All the rules of Baseball still apply. At the start it was hard for the grade 1’s to grasp the concept of this game, but after spending some time trialing and error, they had a lot of fun. They learned the rules of Baseball and Kickball, and remained good sports throughout the game.

Volleyball (American) -

In Volleyball there are two teams, the aim is to hit the ball over the net, and hit it on the ground. Due to not having the facilities; I chose to modify this game, splitting the grade 1s into two teams, and drawing an imaginary line, instead of having a large net. They learned how to hit the ball the same way in which people do when playing Volleyball.

With the grade 1’s immersed in fun outdoor activities; they always have the chance to be out of the classroom environment that they are kept in throughout the day.

For the foreign teacher performance of the Titanic in the Art Festival, we made some of the set pieces. This included a flower, which we held when playing the role of Rose. The students seemed to like it so for this weeks English Corner, we showed them how to make their own paper lotus flower.

It consisted of simple folding techniques and encouraged to students to consider symmetry, as accuracy was key. The students followed our instructions very well and were very keen to show off their lovely and colourful paper flowers.

Grade Two:

On Monday, grade 2 played a memory game, where they had to find the matching pictures. The students were divided into two teams and they each took turns choosing two numbered squares from 1 to 48. If the two squares revealed identical pictures, they scored a point.

Grade Three:
During last week English Corner, the students were able to practice a hip-pop dance. During the first activity, the students picked their favourite three steps from a driller video. After practice, everyone presented their favourite step in front of the class.

The students were presented with new vocabulary such as slide to the right and left, back and forth and shake your hips.  At the end of class, the students were able to put together a small choreography for everyone to enjoy.

Grade Four :
This week grade 4 and I made ‘name aliens’. Firstly we folded a piece of paper and wrote our English names in big writing. Then, we cut around them, presenting a weird, abstract, symmetrical shape.

Their task then was to get creative and turn the shape into an alien or anything else that caught their imagination. The results were great, some very funny and all of them original and imaginative, and as always very colourful.

Grade Five:

On Wednesday, grade 5 wanted to play two games they had played previously. One was a game of musical chairs, while the other was charades. It became apparent that the boys  have a strong liking for super hero movies, as most of their topics in charades were about characters such as Spiderman, Thor and so on. The students were quite active for both activities - perhaps because the heavy rain that cancelled their PE classes left them with lots of excessive energy.
